The Sylvan Lake Tigers atom football team was established in 2010 and plays in a non-competitive, fair play league. It is a full contact tackle football league, but the games are played jamboree style with modified rules, 9 players each side, and the coaches are on the field at all times. It is volunteer driven and all parents are encouraged to help out either on or off the field, regardless of their experience with the sport. The Atom team is ground zero for football in Sylvan Lake and although it is aimed at players who are 9-10 years old, an 8 year old is also eligible to play. It is impressive to see the young, energetic players that Sylvan Lake has been producing and to watch them advance to the older more competitive teams. They are eager to learn, want to play and are extremely coachable. Football at this age is very exciting, not only for the players, but for the coaches and parents too! The players experience an extreme learning curve that is fun to be a part of, especially at a player's "first game". These players get as much out of practice as they do out of the games. In just a few months, they learn to safely participate full contact and they grow from children into young athletes. Their skill development is based on the same philosophy and hard work as all of the other teams in Sylvan Lake Minor Football program. While the emphasis of this level of football is on having fun and the learning of fundamental skills, you will be surprised at how competitive the game days can actually be.
